Does your wallet “Spark Joy” in your life?

Chinese New Year is just around the corner and I was “Marie Kondo-ing” my home when I stumbled upon an article about Wallet Feng Shui. Did you know that according to the art and science of Feng Shui, your wallet plays a big role in attracting wealth? So you mean you have to #KonMari your wallet too? The answer is yes.

According to that article, this will help enhance your chances of attracting wealth or in other words “positive energy” and I found this to be somewhat enlightening. I have never been a practitioner of Feng Shui but growing up in a Chinese household, I know certain dos and don’ts when it comes to basic Feng Shui at home. And this got me thinking about our wallets and how we take it for granted. We jam receipts, crumpled notes, dirty coins and all sorts of nonsense in it. Besides my phone, my purse is something that I can never leave home without. It is with me everywhere I go yet it is an essential item that I take for granted and sometimes do not give enough respect.

Here are some tips I’ve learnt and put together to care for your wallet and give it a renewed energy this New Year.

Keep your wallet tidy

Similar to our living and office space, clutter pretty much messes up the calm in your life. The same energy applies to your wallet or purse as well. A clean and tidy wallet allows and attracts positive energy to flow through.

Remove things that don’t “Spark Joy” …Literally. Get rid of those supermarket receipts and do you really need to carry around 20 loyalty cards?  For cards that you rarely use I recommend getting a separate card holder. That way you can grab it only when you need them, keeping your wallet clutter free.

Treat your wallet with respect

Your wallet is an essential item that helps you carry very important personal things such as your ID, drivers license, bank/credit cards cards and cash. These personal things are just as important as a passport. So find a proper designated place at home or at the office to place your wallet (instead of just carelessly chucking it somewhere). That way you will always know where to find it. If your wallet had feelings, it would feel safe and appreciated too!

Organise your contents

Every wallet comes with card pockets, slots and a section for your cash. These features are meant for you to keep your things organised. Since we’re already tidying our wallets, why not organise it too. I like to keep all my important or frequently used cards together in a section of my purse. That way, I can access them quickly.

Most minimalist wallets these days provide just 3-4 card slots for frequently used cards. The word is “minimalist” and by providing only “minimal” card slots, prevents you from over stocking your wallet with things you don’t need. Again….only things that are important or in #KonMari terms….things that “spark joy”.

Another thing that I like to do is to arrange my notes neatly according to denomination I find this step very useful especially when I’m in a hurry to pay up at the cashier. There are also wallets that allow quick access to your cash with a money clip.

Choose the right wallet for your lifestyle

Let’s face it. Not everyone can use a minimalist wallet with only 3 card slots. Its just not for everyone because we all have different lifestyles. For some people, it’s important to keep receipts, cards and other papers. So, I highly recommend choosing a wallet that fits your personality and lifestyle.

If you are an outdoorsy or sporty type person, then you need to get a wallet that’s tough and can withstand the elements. If you are a frequent flyer then perhaps a wallet that can keep your travel documents organised…you get the idea.

I’m certainly no tidying expert or Feng Shui guru, but after going through the process of decluttering in both my living space and my purse, I do feel a renewed energy as I go about my life and a steady calm. Though I’m still trying to get the hang of it but I treat my belongings with a lot of appreciation these days and I think this world could use a little more gratitude. As they say, gratitude equals happiness.

I wish you all happy tidying up and Happy Chinese New Year.
